Masculinity & Femininity
“Masculine strength comes from tension and contraction whereas feminine strength comes from flow and flexibility.”
There's masculinity and femininity and, at least in America, people are pushed toward one or the other. A guy is suppose to be this strong man who stands up for himself and is void of all “weak” emotions. Women are suppose to be quiet, clean and well put together. Some may define masculine men as emotionless but that's not what it truly means to be a man.
There are emotions that are accepted among masculinity and there are others that are not. Emotions such as being sad is generally not tolerated among the idea of masculinity, with a common motivator to harden up and not show emotion being the phrase “be a man!” But there are such things as “correct” emotions for men to have, such as lust, and courage. These emotions cover the basics of what masculine men need to have.
Male teenagers or even adults who show no lust toward women (or show very little) can be seen as gay, or that something isn't quite right. Their heterosexuality needs to be pouring out of them to affirm their masculinity, we see this in movies, tv shows, and all over the media. The reason for lust and not love is that men should be able to have many women but not be tied down to any. There's even a term used for when a man is controlled by a woman, it's called “whipped,” and is used to mock a man in a relationship. A man should not love a woman but lust for many, they should be “untameable.”
Courage is important for a man so that they can be successful, protect others from danger, and stand up to challenges. A man must be courageous and show no fear, for fear is a weakness and no man should show weakness. A masculine man is a rugged lone wolf who women want but can't have.
Men are suppose to have sturdy unwavering emotions, whereas women can be sad, they can cry and act “weak" without as much backlash as a man would. However they cannot take control of situations or be demanding like men can. These stereotypes force men and women toward being polar opposites, where men should be rugged and domineering for example while women should be submissive and dainty.
